Tariffs & FAQ

1. Q: Does medical aids cover Biokinetics?

A: Yes, all medical aids cover Biokinetics, except for Medcor and Keyhealth.

2. Q: Do you need a doctor to refer you before you can make an appointment?

A: No, although we also work from referrals, it is not necessary for you to go to the doctor before you visit us, unless your medical aid requires it.

3. Q: What is the difference between a Physiotherapist and a Biokineticist? How do I know where to go?

A: The main difference is that a Bio is 2nd phase rehab, while a Physio is phase 1. This means that straight after injury/operation you should first visit the Physio, as they work to decrease the pain and swelling and restore full, pain free range of motion. After you have regained your range of motion, you move on to 2nd phase rehab with a Bio where we help strengthen and stretch the involved muscles before you return to your sport/everyday activities. Another important difference is that while a Physio only focuses on the specific area of injury, a Bio’s job is to look at the body as a whole and correct any imbalances which may be the cause of the problem/injury.

A biokineticist is a Health care provider who uses exercise as the primary modality to treat disease, injury and movement disorders. Conditions like hypertension, stroke ,joint injuries and chronic conditions like parkinsons are just some of the ailments that fall under the scope of a biokineticist. In todays modern society, with the rapid advancement of technology making our lives much easier and requiring us to use our bodies a lot less, it has come at a price- and that is our Health. This has given rise to the profession of Biokinetics, which is a medically recognized professional discipline, applying scientifically based physical activity, to either help prevent disease or to do final phase rehabilitation following the onset of disease.

We as biokineticists understand and empathise with the fact that everybody is different and every human body responds differently to stresses like exercise. We apply science and our deep knowledge of anatomy to determine each persons capacity to do exercise and then prescribe a carefully planned regime in order to treat the individuals limitations and symptoms.

Our philosophy is “Life through movement” and we believe everybody is capable of improving their quality of life through performing the right exercises on a regular basis.

How do I know if I need a Biokineticist?

Do you suffer from any joint pain?

Joint pain is often associated to poor motor control and muscle weakness. We are trained to identify what is causing the pathology and address it using very specific exercises and other various modalities.

Have you undergone Orthopaedic or Cardiac Surgery?

We are specialists in post-surgical rehabilitation and work very closely with physiotherapists to facilitate recovery. Many operations result in considerable soft tissue damage and muscle weakening. This can have tremendous consequences on ones capacity to perform the normal day to day physical requirements. We address this consequence of surgery by prescribing exercises and stretches that target those areas that have been affected. Due to the complex nature of surgery a big part of the rehabilitation is educating the client on safe movements and what movements to avoid that can otherwise be harmful during the recovery process.

Is your Posture worrying you?

We have all been told by our parents or teachers to sit up straight or to stop slouching. Turns out that they had cause for concern regarding our postural habits. Poor posture not only affects optimal functioning of joints causing conditions like neck and back pain but it can increase our rate of depression and have detrimental effects on our confidence and how people perceive us. Who knew poor posture could be so damaging?

Are you an Athlete looking to enhance your Performance?

Sport has become increasingly scientific as athletes try and gain every advantage they can to better their chances of outperforming the competition. We are trained to offer Sport specific testing and training of an athletes endurance, speed, flexibility, agility, power, strength and reaction times.

Theres nothing wrong with you! That’s great! But are you concerned that you might be at risk of disease in the future?

We all know that prevention is better than cure. At Helena Blaauw Biokineticist we are all about living healthy and looking after your body.
